Oppositional Defiance Disorder – ODD
Oppositional Defiance Disorder or ODD, no formal
psychological diagnostic label could offer a more or better description
of this disruptive behavioural occurrence. Even in layman’s’
terms the core of this behavioral issue with troubled teens jumps
right out at you.
Oppositional: from the opposing side, opponent, and
think stand-off. Defiance – defy, non-compliant disregard, lack of
respect, Disorder or non-normal behaviour. When an adolescent
child/teenager has developed a distinct and recurring, ever-present,
almost default pattern of behavior marked by extreme hostility,
open defiance, aggression, and resentment, oppositional defiant
disorder, ODD might be at play.
ODD can disrupt home and family life, other
relationships, and academic performance. An adolescent with
oppositional defiance disorder or oppositional defiant disorder, often
believes they have a perfect right to be and act so angrily and tend to
blame parents or other authority figures for the behavior, claiming
teachers, friends, or parents are unreasonable and oppressive,
claiming to be the victim here, turning a blind eye to any personal
accountability and ownership. Blame is used to justify unacceptable
negative behavior, often defying parents by purposely breaking the
rules and challenging any limits, boundaries and rules they are given.
Signs of oppositional defiance disorder often begin
to show during early adolescence (ages 7 to 13). It is most often
first on the scene in the environment where they feel most
comfortable and know their boundaries and they will only risk this
mis-behavior at home which may confuse and frustrate parents.
Mistakenly parents often feel they are the cause of the defiance and
the bad behaviour is somehow their fault. Another warning sign might be
others/teachers will start to complain about your child's attitude in
class or on the playground, aggression and bullying of others are
common (iii) Possibly friends will disappear or stop calling.
Intervention is possible and necessary. It involves
behavior modification techniques. To ignore the symptoms of
oppositional defiant disorder, ODD can result in the adolescent with
ODD falling seriously behind academically speaking, losing ground in
social activity, isolating them further and damaging their ability to
succeed and contribute meaningfully as a functional member of
society.
